About Me

I have a love for travel, fashion / makeup & I adore hanging out with my mates. However more recently my focus switched to Health & Wellbeing due to a temporary forced pause, when diagnosed with an Autoimmune Disease. This site is my place to let you in and share what I'm learning along the way. Helpful insights that all women need to know- sick or full of exuberance. The detective in me was set to investigate & I've learned some interesting things.

Why you have to ditch the cleaning chemicals to have a healthy home

This will be the one of the biggest changes you can address, If you don’t want to ingest and inhale poisons, (sounding a bit dramatic, but it’s 100% true).

What you you say if I told you that experts estimate –

72% of toxic exposure comes from inside the family home AND pollutant levels are up to 5 times higher than outdoors! (I’ll tell you why in a minute).

It’s very apparent to me (it soon will be to you too) that the products we’re cleaning our homes with are toxic, to us and our pets, (the residue left on their paws & fur also affects them).

And staggeringly, toxic chemical use isn’t regulated (If you’re thinking that can’t be possibly true- me too, but it is).

A few years ago a biologist interviewed on TV revealed that less than half of the chemicals used in household products are registered on the poisons list and because of this, they really have no idea of the harm to humans, animals & the environment. She also reported that they now know many of them are carcinogenic and will cause endocrine disruption.

This is your hormone system – your thyroid is part of this system (incase you didn’t know, my thyroid sent me through a bit of a loop. It’s not a loop you want to go down – trust me). Given that our hormones play a major part in running our body and are required for fertility, this is a big deal.

So how does your home end up more polluted that outside? All of these commercial products being used in a closed space, ie: not as much air dilution keeping toxicity levels in the air longer, ie: you’re inhaling it.

Let’s have a look at the average house cleaners you most likely grew up with- toilet cleaner, dishwashing liquid, floor cleaner and polish, wood polish, shower cleaner, glass cleaner, oven cleaner, cook top cleaner, room freshener, carpet refreshers etc…

How do you feel when I tell you all of them are toxic, yep, every single one of them (unless you’ve already swapped to clean products 👏🏼 cudos to you if you have).

I’ve researched a few of the chemicals in the products above, let’s have a closer look and see what I find –

  • Sodium Laurel Sulphate (SLS) – Irritant to skin, lungs and eyes, can cause skin irritations resulting in acne & rashes & has caused cancer in laboratory animals
  • Propylene Glycol– Affects the Central Nervous System, can give seizures, cardiac arrhythmia, all side effects heightened for children
  • Ethanolamine– skin, respiratory tract and eye injury, induced asthmatic reactions, liver damage (via inhalation), sperm reduction in men, caused vomiting in cats, hematological changes in dogs (pregnancy problems) along with causing skin irritations in dogs & cats.

This really is a minefield, and I’ve really only just touched the surface (believe me once you open the lid on this you’ll be horrified and angry that companies are actually allowed to sell us this rubbish).

This is why you need to switch to toxic free cleaners if you want a healthy home, it’s damaging your health.

The sooner the better, you can still have a sparkling clean home, scented with fresh aromatics and not be suffocating your lungs using low tox products.
